WORLDS BEST PUPPY NAMES |
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Naming your puppy is a fun and important job. Choosing from an almost endless variety of names to suit your moods, mannerisms or attitudes. It is said we should chose a name based on what is best for your little canine... sort of. Since you dog will follow you as a pack leader it is best to select a name or names that are first approved by you. Second, you chosen name should be distinct and easily heard from a distance - "woof" and or "hey Mutt" just doesn't cut it. The tone of your voice when you say your puppy's name makes a big difference in how your puppy will respond when called by you. A positive, uplifting tone will make your pup happy to "come when called". We let a few days go by before naming our puppy. That way we could see how we like a name and if it matched our new dog. The second day our new arrival was exploring our house when he suddenly darted under that couch and started to growl. We could see the curtains move every so often, then silence and then a little more growling. This went on for more than ten minutes before I went over to the couch and lifted it up to see what was going on. Our little guy had trapped a cricket and had it cornered against the back wall. The cricket was fine, just dizzy from rapid paw bouncing it had received while in our puppy's "boxing ring" under the couch. We ended up choosing Cricket as our dog's name. A distinctive, easily heard name that truly matched our puppy's mannerism. Of course the earned nicknames that followed his first year of life were varied and far spread. Nothing is as curious or energetic as a puppy. I know it's not possible to be in two places at once but it sure seems like he can be. He could be in the basement and if we called his name we could hear one of his high speed takeoffs - ticka, ticka, ticka and then he would appear at your feet in what seemed like two seconds later. Or, someone could be at the door and the moment he heard footsteps outside or a knock at the door he would be standing by the door and would let out one of his "woofs", followed by sniffing at the door threshold to see who it was. Your puppy's name is an important connection that you will make with your loved dog. They all start life in a smaller (cute) size and grow into our companions that we share our lives with. The name you end up choosing is your verbal link to your faithful companion. In time they will recognize different sounds and mannerisms from you as a type of command or "intention" that you will have. For example, the sound of your car keys may mean that it is time to go for a ride. Maybe patting your lap means "jump up here and lay down". Of course that doesn't usually work with a 180 pound Rotti seeing as they generally need half the couch (or more). My favorite is reaching for the door know and having a "stare off" with your pup. Your hand is on the know and your dog is staring at you as if to say "you were going to go out without me were you? I don't think so!" Take your time and be selective with your puppy's name. It's with them for life. Where did we get all the PUPPY names? We have compiled a name list from various lists from all over the world. To date we have over 15,000 and counting. We aren't finished yet but expect that there will be well over 25,000 or more puppy names when we are! Why create such a large puppy name list (the largest (we think)? I checked other puppy name lists on the internet, but, they were all incomplete. I wanted ALL the puppy names available when naming my puppy. Locating name list after name list, trying to find more names was time consuming and frustrating. I also wanted a puppy name list that could be downloaded and printed so I could relax with friends while having a drink and discuss possible choices. Short puppy names are in and always were. Short, simple names are easily said, heard and have traditionally worked the best. Popular or unique names? Popular and unique names both are acceptable. In the end it is up to you and your new pup. All young puppies are cute, but, think ahead a year or so to when they are fully grown. I always liked short simple names; people names like "Max" or "Sam". They are examples of popular puppy names. Although, unique names have the bonus of being distinctive and special. A rare puppy name so it stands out in the crowd just like you puppy. "Say the Name Out Loud" Does it sound right? Does the puppy name match your puppy? Does the name sound ridiculous? Ask your friends what they think of your chosen name or to comment on your list of possible puppy names. Name Teaching Trick. Recognition of your little hound's name can also be achieved by rewarding him / her with a small treat every time you say their name. This reinforces that sound with a reward as far as your puppy is concerned. One trick we learned was to connect their name with something our little pooch wanted to do. So, "Cricket do you want to go for a walk?" worked very well after about 2 weeks living with us.
